Maanta waa maalintii afar iyo tobnaad! Today, we discuss the exceptions in Islam for those who are unable to fast due to travel or health reasons.

1. Since I am traveling a long distance today, I am exempted from fasting.

Somali Meaning: Maadaama aan maanta safrayo masaafo dheer, waa la iga dhaafay soonka.

Vocabulary:

  • Exempted“: Laga dhaafay (Being excused from a rule or duty).
  • Long distance“: Masaafo dheer.

2. I am feeling quite unwell, so I will have to make up this fast at a later date.

Somali Meaning: Waxaan dareemayaa caafimaad darro (bukaan), markaa waa inaan soonkan gudaa maalin kale.

Vocabulary:

  • Unwell“: Caafimaad darro / Bukid (Not feeling healthy).
  • Make up“: Gidid (To do something later because you couldn’t do it now).

3. Pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses are not required to fast.

Somali Meaning: Haweenka uurka leh iyo dadka qaba xanuunada raaga loogama baahna inay soomaan.

Vocabulary:

  • Chronic illnesses“: Xanuunada raaga (Long-lasting health conditions).
  • Not required“: Loogama baahna (Optional or not mandatory in their case).
