1. During Ramadan, we abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset.
Somali Meaning: Inta lagu guda jiro bisha Ramadaan, waxaan ka fogaannaa cuntada iyo cabitaanka laga bilaabo waaberiga ilaa qorrax dhaca.
Vocabulary:
- “Abstain from“: Inaad ka fogaatid ama iska deysid (To stay away from something).
- “Until“: Ilaa (Up to a certain time).
2. Fasting is a way for us to practice patience and feel for the poor.
Somali Meaning: Soonku waa noo hab aan ku baranno samirka, kuna dareenno dadka danyarta ah.
Vocabulary:
- “Patience“: Samir (Being able to wait or endure something difficult).
- “Feel for“: Inaad dareento (To have sympathy or understand someone’s situation).
3. We break our fast with a meal called Iftar, which often starts with dates.
Somali Meaning: Waxaan afurannaa cunto loo yaqaanno Afur, taas oo inta badan ku bilaabata timir.
